Hot off the press: Methods for capturing salmon in the ocean
The early marine lives of salmon have long been poorly understood due to challenges in capturing these fishes at sea. Our new paper reviews and synthesizes the five main methods currently used to capture juvenile Pacific salmon in the marine environment. We compare gear, deployment strategies, selectivity, cost, and fish welfare implications across the methods, drawing on decades of field experience and published literature. In doing so, we fill a longstanding gap in the literature and provide researchers with key information for designing and scoping investigations into juvenile marine-phase salmon.
